Binh Le has spent more than a decade building businesses in Ho Chi Minh City on relationships, instinct and sheer presence. It works. It also means nothing happens without him — and the opportunity now in front of him is one he cannot carry alone.

Two roles, two starting points

In the novel, Binh has the vision and the relationships and nothing underneath them. Lan has to build the system while the business carries on running. Most people recognise one of those two positions immediately. The companion course starts from either.

If you’re building something — it gives you an evidence-based foundation before you commit money to it.

If you’re the one holding an operation together — it gives you the diagnosis, the language and the Playbook to put in front of the person who signs things off.

The work, structured.

Twenty-six lessons across five modules. Around four hours of structured exercises. The same sequence Binh Le & Associates moved through, the same four-pillar diagnostic Henderson used on every coaching call, and the same Playbook Lan built from the spaghetti chart up — this time on your own numbers.

About Le Thi Hai Yen

Co-author · translator of the Vietnamese edition

I have spent more than twenty years working alongside business leaders through organisational transformation and the management of people. What I have learned is that the hardest questions are also the most useful ones. What is really holding this organisation back? Which capabilities must we protect if the business is to survive what comes next? Why does a performance management system we designed so carefully fall apart the moment it meets the floor?

Those questions are not obstacles. They are where growth begins. They also demand real work — building, adjusting, and sometimes starting again from the beginning — particularly when the design of the systems and of the people has not kept pace with the strategy.

A living system has to be built on a deep understanding of people and of the context it operates in. That is why this book carries the method alongside the real feelings of Binh, Lan and the others. In practice the two are never separate, and the lessons matter as much as the successes.

About Paul Mason

I came to Vietnam in 1993 as a real estate entrepreneur. Over three decades I’ve built and exited businesses here in real estate, master franchises and operations. I’ve made every mistake in this book at least twice.

My early ventures hit the ceiling most entrepreneurs hit: growth stalled because everything depended on me. The master franchise systems I later operated showed me what world-class systematisation looks like — the discipline, the frameworks, the operational rigour that makes a business scalable. But those systems were built for US markets, and when I applied them here they broke against the realities of family ownership, relationship-based markets, and the expectations around hierarchy and authority.

I’ve spent fifteen years since then rebuilding them from the ground up. That became the FAST System: built in Vietnam, for fast-moving markets across ASEAN. Binh Le’s journey is that work in action — the challenges are real, and the mistakes are mine.

This is the system I wish I’d had 30 years ago.

About the book.

FAST Start is the story of Binh Le, a real estate entrepreneur in Ho Chi Minh City who has built a business he can no longer manage. Across sixteen chapters he works with John Henderson, a senior coach with a global franchise, to build the foundation his business never had. The novel puts the FAST System into action: four pillars, four stages, and the discipline of choosing evidence over hope.

Foreword by Dr Trương Thị Lan Anh.

The print edition is published in Vietnamese by Alphabooks as FAST Start — Quyển 1: Bẫy thành công. The English edition is in preparation. The first three chapters are available on request.
